Thickness

Lower quality planks are about 4mm thick while higher quality planks are 8mm or more. The sturdiness of the floor indeed increases with the thickness of the plank. However, it?s the thickness of the wear layer that determines the durability of the floor. In particular, the wear layer protects the design on the plank. The wear layer should be at least 12mil, and if you have an active household with pets, consider buying 20mil or higher. There is a protective topcoat on the wear layer of a good quality vinyl floor.

Waterproof vinyl

A vinyl plank with a solid wood plastic composite (WPC) core is waterproof while standard vinyl flooring with a solid PVC core is water-resistant. WPC flooring boasts a more technologically advanced construction overall. It is soft underfoot because of this construction and because WPC vinyl tends to be thick. This type of flooring is free of phthalates and, therefore, more environmentally friendly. Generally, luxury vinyl planks, regardless of their core material, are connected during installation to create a floor that floats over the subfloor.
